Tayloe’s Mosquito Control
A single bite from an infected mosquito causes West Nile Fever.
West Nile Virus (WNV) is one of the best-known mosquito-borne diseases in North America, and it can pose a serious health threat to humans and animals. Spread primarily by Culex mosquitoes, the virus can lead to mild flu-like symptoms in most cases. In severe cases, it can cause neurological complications, including encephalitis and meningitis.
Understanding how West Nile Virus is transmitted, its symptoms, and how to prevent mosquito bites is essential for protecting yourself and your loved ones.

How is West Nile Virus Transmitted?
West Nile Virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes become carriers of the virus after biting infected birds, the primary hosts. Once the mosquito is infected, it can transmit the virus to humans and animals through biting.
Mosquito Species Involved
In the U.S., Culex pipiens, also known as the common house mosquito, is the primary vector for West Nile Virus.
Transmission
Humans and animals are typically infected between summer and early fall, as mosquito activity peaks during the warmer months.
Not Spread by Direct Contact
West Nile Virus doesn’t infect humans through casual contact.

Symptoms of West Nile Virus
Most people who contract West Nile Virus experience mild or no symptoms. However, about 1 in 5 people may develop mild flu-like symptoms, while a smaller percentage can experience severe neurological complications.
Here’s a breakdown of what happens in people infected with WNV:
- Fever
- Headache
- Muscle Weakness
- Swollen Lymph Glands
- Mild to Moderate Body Aches
- Fatigue
- Skin Rash (in some cases)
These mild symptoms, especially fever, headache, body aches, occur only for a few days. But, as with many viral infections, the fatigue lingers for weeks.

Serious Symptoms (Rare)
In about 1 in 150 cases, West Nile Virus causes severe illness affecting the central nervous system. These symptoms occur:
- High Fever
- More Bothersome Body Aches
- Neck Stiffness
- Confusion or Disorientation
- Tremors
- Seizures
- Paralysis
A more severe form can lead to West Nile encephalitis (brain inflammation) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord), and require hospitalization. In rare cases, West Nile Virus can be fatal.
If you think you have West Nile Virus infection, go to the emergency room. They’ll perform a blood test and provide specific treatment for this serious illness.

How Is West Nile Virus Diagnosed?
West Nile Virus infection is diagnosed through medical evaluation of symptoms and laboratory tests. If a doctor suspects WNV, they may order blood tests or a cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) test to detect antibodies or genetic material from the virus.
In severe cases, where the virus affects the brain or spinal cord, additional diagnostic procedures help assess inflammation or damage. Early detection is crucial, especially for individuals showing signs of severe neurological involvement.

How Is West Nile Virus Treated?
There is no specific antiviral treatment for West Nile Virus. Treatment means managing symptoms and supporting the body’s recovery. Mild cases typically resolve independently, with over-the-counter pain relievers to reduce fever and discomfort.
In severe cases, such as those involving neurological complications, hospitalization may be required, where patients can receive intravenous fluids, pain management, respiratory support, and sometimes interventions to reduce brain swelling. Prompt medical attention is crucial for severe cases to provide the best chance of recovery from this infectious disease.
Risk Factors for WNV Spread
The risk factors for West Nile Virus (WNV) include:
Time of Year
WNV transmission is highest during the warmer months, particularly from late summer to early fall when mosquitoes are most active.
Geographical Location
Living in or traveling to areas with known WNV activity, especially in the United States, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Asia, increases your risk.
Outdoor Activity
Spending a lot of time outdoors, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active, raises your chances of being bitten.
Age
Adults over the age of 60 are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms if infected.
Weakened Immune System
Individuals with compromised immune systems, such as those with certain medical conditions (e.g., cancer, diabetes, kidney disease) or on immunosuppressive medications, are more likely to experience severe illness from West Nile encephalitis.

Preventing West Nile Virus
How can you tell if a certain little buzzer is an infected mosquito? You can’t!
The best way to prevent West Nile Virus is to avoid mosquito bites. Here’s how you can protect yourself:
01
Mosquito Control Treatments
Our professional mosquito control services can help reduce mosquito populations in your yard, lowering your risk of being bitten.
02
Eliminate Standing Water
Standing water bodies are ideal mosquito breeding sites. Be sure to remove any standing water from bird baths, clogged gutters, solar covers over swimming pools flower pots, and other areas where water may collect.
03
Use Insect Repellent
Apply an insect repellent while outside.
04
Wear Protective Clothing
When mosquitoes are most active (dusk and dawn), wear long sleeves and pants to minimize exposed skin.
05
Install Outdoor Fans
Mosquitoes are weak fliers, so outdoor fans on patios and decks may deter them.
